Following his exhibition in Manhattan, New York, artist Kim Jung-Wuk presents his solo exhibition Green Scale at Gallery ARTRIE HEYRI.

 

Kim Jung-Wuk works with optical holography, the foundational technique from which all holography originates. His practice begins with an image intrinsic to the medium itself: the illusion. A form that is not substance, yet appears as substance — this uncertain figure conjured by light has remained the question running through his entire body of work.

 

The exhibition takes its title, Green Scale, from the works made using a green light source — the light with which optical holograms are recorded. For the artist, green is not merely a chosen palette; it is the color that most precisely describes the medium of optical holography, and the color through which the theme of illusion is most vividly rendered.

 

The artist’s preoccupation with illusion traces back to a deeply personal experience. Amblyopia weakened his optic nerve, leading to the loss of vision in one eye. Through this process, he encountered a disorienting perceptual experience — illusion and substance overlapping, separating, then merging again. This experience became the seed of his curiosity toward optical holography, and later, the foundation upon which his entire practice was built.

 

At the center of this exhibition stands a new work expanded into kinetic form. Individual pieces in slit formation are arranged in sequence, their embedded images separating and rejoining, the illusion appearing and disappearing in turn. It is the artist’s own experience of illusion, translated into a moving sculptural language.

 

Green Scale invites viewers to directly confront, in visual terms, the gap between the real and the illusory. Between the world of light conjured by holography and the reality we inhabit, viewers are asked to pause and measure the distance between the two. It is the artist’s hope that this exhibition offers, alongside that pause, a quiet moment of reflection — and perhaps, a small revelation.
